About Us
Primary Care describes the first point of contact that individuals, the family and the community have with the National Health Service. NHS Stoke on Trent is a Primary Care Trust and its main function is to commission (buy) the health services required to meet the needs of the population we serve. We are also responsible for improving the health of our local population through investment and modernisation plans.
Our core responsibilities are to:
- Reduce health inequalities and improve health
- Commission health services
- Provide primary and community health services
- Work in partnership with other NHS organisations, the City Council and other public, independent and voluntary organisations
Our budget is £503 million and we serve a population of more than 270,000 people who are registered with a GP in Stoke-on-Trent. As well as commissioning services, we also provide and manage some healthcare services including 57 GP Practices,including Hanley Health and Wellbeing Centre, 63 Pharmacies, 26 Dental Practices, 27 Opticians and two Community Hospitals and Primary Care Centres.
